Bead Asssortment (52 Pieces) Review

I wanted to buy a lacing set for my toddler to use (supervised, of course!) to practice fine motor skills. I love the HABA brand and wanted something safe. And you can't beat the design elements that HABA always come through with. This set seemed like a great value for the money, with 52 pieces. However, the photo shows hearts, bells, and other shaped beads and there were only three "special" beads in the set. The rest are plain ovals or circles. Blah. What fun is that? I should have just gone to the craft store and picked up some unfinished beads.
These are also a lot smaller than I was expecting. I didn't think they'd be huge, but the biggest one- a heart (and remember, that's one of THREE large beads)- is a little less than an inch long and the hole is teeny. My daughter can thread the shoelace through these with assistance and she would have been able to do it on her own if the holes were bigger. There's one shoelace included, and you can't fit all the beads on it. Extra shoelaces are easy to find, but still.
I wanted to purchase a second set of beads in the future to add to the fun, maybe one of the cute Bambini sets that are more interesting. Now I think I'm going to hold off, unless I can see them in person first. And I'm going to pay a lot more attention to product dimensions in the future.

Gummi Bears Review

I had purchased this for my daughter for Christmas. I didn't read the sizes and when I received it, I realized it was way too small for my 22 month old.

However, Lots of possibilities for pretend play. Would be great for a child to add to her tea party to serve her Barbie's, My Little Ponies, dolls, stuffed animals, anything! It's really cute for that kind of play.

Could also be great for a pretend kitchen. To maybe set as a "candy dish"on the counter or something.

I do allow my daughter to play with them when I am present and we sort the colors and count. (So, it can be educational too!) I try to teach her how to play with them in her kitchen and with her doll.

Just note the small size and be sure your child is ready for it. They really are adorable, durable, unique and fun. The tin they come in is a real little tin. Not a cheaply made toy at all. Lots of hours of play to be had here.

Memo-Hearts Review

This was a gift to my four year old daughter for Valentine's Day this year, and it was absolutely perfect. The heart-shaped tin has an adorable print on the exterior by Ulrike Fischer, with a girl and boy angel with heart-shaped bodies arranged symmetrically, as if meeting for a kiss. The tin is reminiscent of a Valentine's candy tin, and is red velvet-lined on the interior. Its contents, of course, have longer-lasting value and no sugar-high potential. :)

The tin measures roughly 4.5" x 4.5". It contains 64 hearts, for a total of 32 matches, and each heart measures 1.5" x 1.5". The images on the hearts, also by Ulrike Fischer and are a collection of whimsical Valentine's themed pictures, including hearts in varying amounts, flowers, and the same angel-children depicted on the front of the tin. Many of them look very similar to one or two of the other matches, mainly in terms of the color scheme, so playing the game itself requires close scrutiny to discern differences which are more subtle than most memory games. I don't necessarily see this as a drawback. In fact it led to more confusion for mom than it did for my daughter once we got down to game playing, and she even beat me fair and square!

My daughter was thrilled to receive this game and enjoys playing it with us. My two year old is fond of the heart pieces and likes to admire them. Like other Haba games we own, the pieces are quite formidable; the cardboard is dense, thick, unbendable, and is coated with a plastic-like protective outer, so minor exposures to moisture would probably not ruin it, and a little rough play on the part of younger siblings won't do them in either.

Of course, I like that the pieces and tin were made in Germany, not China.

I'd highly recommend this game as a non-candy option for little kids (who've certainly already been over-saturated on sugar, in the case of my two) on Valentine's Day.

Ear Tug Review

Another fabulous game from Haba! It is a take on any other bingo style game, with a few twists.

Ear Tug consists of 9 heavy cardboard squares, each decorated with an animal with cut outs where the ears should be. There is a blue fabric bag that contains 21 wooden and colored shapes, that represent the ears.

The object is to pick a card (or 2 or 3 or 4 depending on the number of players). Each player puts their hand into the bag, which you cannot see through. You must pick out a shape and if it matches one of your cards, you place it on that card and play on. There are 3 blue pieces that cannot be used, just to keep things interesting. The person who wins is the one that fills their cards first.

We bought this 3 years ago for my now 6 year old. She and her brother, age 3, love to play this game together. There is no need for parental help, reading or counting. It is simply a your turn/ my turn type game.

It has held up and is quite durable. I recommend this!

Stacking Ball Colori Review

My little nephew (7 mos.), for whom I purchased this toy, loved it. He was cranky and hungry when he arrived, but was quite interested in exploring the ball. He stopped complaining and reached for it. What's more interesting is that another relative had given him an electronic ball--pretty much the same size as this--and his siblings placed that one side-by-side with this and turned it on (all the lights and music flashing) and he preferred this Colori ball. The better to stick in his mouth. Oh well.

Haba Letter Dwarves Alphabet Game Review

Letter Dwarves is a game produced by Haba aimed at reinforcing alphabet and vocabulary skills in children ages 6-10 (these are the manufactuers recommended ages, I believe kids as young as 4 can enjoy this game).Haba is known for producing kids games with high-quality components and this one is no exception.
The goal of Letter Dwarves is to be the first player to move your dwarf pawn around the board while collecting at least 3 gold tokens.To accomplish this, players flip tiles depicting one of the following:

1 - a set of objects
2- "Fairy Forget-me-not" holding a picture frame asking you to name 2 objects, 2 animals or give 2 names
3 - "Hob Hotchpotch" holding a frame asking the player to identify a letter falling between two other letters

For tiles 1 or 2, the player has a choice of using one of 4 letters, each of which is resting on a barrel on the gameboard and each having a point value (1-4) used to move the players dwarf around the board.The player must choose one of the four letters to name an object on the card (in case 1) or 2 animals, objects or names (in case 2).In order to land on treasure spaces and collect gold, the player may need to use a specific letter associated with the number of spaces he needs to move.This is the stage where vocabulary comes in as players try to think of different ways to name an object on the card (ie "castle" could also be "fortress" or "palace" etc...).Alternately, if a player draws tile type 3, they name the missing letter and roll a 6-sided die to determine movement points.
My kids enjoyed Letter Dwarves, though perhaps not quite as much as some other games we've played.I do think this is a good game to help younger kids work on their vocabulary and alphabet.I also like the fact that it encourages kids to really use their powers of observation at times.My son needed to name an object beginning with E and had a card with a Zebra, a Camel, a fence, shed, bushes... and was drawing a blank until it finally hit him that the animals had Eyes and Ears.For my daughter, the game was good for getting her to identify beginning sounds of words with their letters.
Overall a pretty good game for kids.It's hard to go wrong with Haba, a company that consistently puts out quality products.

Rainbow Timber - DISCONTINUED - a great game for the whole famliy Review

If you are familiar with the game Jenga, then you will understand why I call Rainbow Timber "Jenga with Attitude."Like Jenga, the object of the game is to remove pieces from the tower without causing it to topple over.However, by adding the colored die, the game is taken to another level - one requiring a higher level of reasoning skill and greater dexterity.

Further, Rainbow Timber adds an element of chance that is not present in Jenga.In my opinion, that aspect of the game also makes it more suitable as a game to play with younger players.Because each player must remove a piece matching the color showing when the die is rolled, younger players may feel they are on a more level playing field.Yes, the thought process and reasoning to determine which piece will be the most appropriate to remove still exists.And yes, adults may have an advantage based on those skills.But by adding the element of chance, younger players may feel they have a better opportunity to compete and win.

This game is rated for age 6 and above.However, I believe that younger children, perhaps as young as 3, could enjoy this game if an adult was playing it with them.As with other toys, one would have to gauge the maturity level and the attention span of the child to determine whether it is suitable.

Kunibertas Merry Marble Play Book - DISCONTINUED Review

This game book was our first introduction to Haba games. It is excellent. The book contains a story about a princess that catapaulted her marble out of the castle and the marbles journey back to the princess. The book has little tracks that the marble can move on. This was initially my 3 year olds favorite part of the book. Now she is four and she plays the game where (like the princess) you can catapault your marble out of the castle, or through a gate, or through a hole and ring a bell. This occurs when the book folds into a stand alone castle. The book has a description and rules for many games that you can play using a wooden princess, and marbles made of foam,rubber, wood and glass. This allows for the children to compare the different properties as they catapault and roll the marbles. We have not yet gotten to that aspect of the game, but that's what I enjoy about it is the book continues to grow with the child and they can find more exciting areas to explore. It is really great fun to play.

Play Scale Review

I am a preschool teacher and I bought this to use in my classroom.I loved the idea of it being wood - not plastic.I am glad I only bought one - rather than the 4 I contmeplated.I was surprised by how small the bowls were and that they were just attached by a thin string.Somehow, the children kept getting the strings all twisted around the main "post".I did like that the bowls were fairly high so it was clear which side was higher and which was lower - with some plastic balances I have used, there is so little room for the bowl to move, it is difficult to tell which one is heavier.My students did enjoy playing with it, I am just not sure it is worth the realitively high price.

Magnetic Stairs Review

I purchased a lot of Haba toys, even more of the marble run toys.
All their products are super high quality, and super fun for my
2 and a half year old son. I purchased this one a few months ago
and my son absolutely loves it, and plays with it all the time, all
his friends, and mommies of his friends love it too. Everyone wants to
get one after they see their kids wrapped up with it for long periods of
time. I love toys that are fun and make kids smart, and that's what this
toy is and does. Kids have to use strategy to figure out where to put the
red and blue pieces to make the marbles go where they want them to,
not to mention my son uses his little cars on it as well. It's a really good
sized toy, I like toys that are bigger and hardy. I'm also happy that it's made
in Europe and I don't have to worry about possible lead.

HABA Comet Shower Review

Baby Review

These were my daughter's first blocks at 12 months, and it's been a pleasure to see her go from practicing gripping and picking up one block, passing it from one hand to the other, banging the blocks together (makes a great sound! enjoyable for her and muted enough for my ears) to now stacking them as many as 5 or 6 high at 17 months. Also, as far as size, I have never been concerned that my daughter would choke on these. The color stains are a nice mix. I like that they are not all primary colors, and my child is drawn to all of them. My only minor complaint is that the shiny, smooth varnish makes the blocks slide against against each other making it more challenging to stack them. In short, there's not much grip. It's not a serious flaw, and has not prevented my child from getting a lot out of playing with these blocks.

Cuboro Standard Review

This is the most innovative, well designed, environmentally/durable made building toy I have seen with an exception to Kapla. The swiss makers have put a lot of thought and energy into this and it shows. I got it for my 4 year old (still a little young for it) for xmas, and I was totally pleased. Unlike other marble runs, which are much less expensive, this one challenges the child with the most possibilities both in the interchangeable nature of the uniform block pieces, but also in that large portions of a run can be in the form of tunnels which are out of sight of the child. All other marble runs have the marble in plain view, which works more like a race track than a puzzle or system which Cuboro excels at. That said, if you are a parent trying to offer marble runs as an alternative to playing with matchbox car tracks--cuboro might disappoint.

This game made me think about the needed changes in schooling put forth by an an expert on learning. Cuboro is all about tinkering:

Orchard - Fooor Game Review

I just bought this game for my daughters 5th birthday. I have 3 daughters, twins that are 7 and my 5 year old.I was looking for a unique game that can't be bought at wal-mart.Something new and different. This is it!! We had a great time playing this game.The girls wanted to play and play.Fun for parents too because it is a pretty quick game.Also the fruit is wooden, durable and so cute.Only complain is the baskets, they are very cheap and are already breaking, but I don't think this is a big deal because I am sure I can find some different small baskets to use.It is a little pricey but I think it will last a very long time, it is very well made besides the baskets.It has 10 pears, 10 apples, 10 cherrys and 10 plums. These each run about $2.50 each so it's really not that highly priced. Also it's not made in china where something is recalled everyday, you can trust Haba toys!

Wrist Rattle Flower Review

This is a great idea. Our daughter loved it when she was four months old but she pulled it off of her wrist in a matter of seconds. This rather defeats the purpose of having a toy attached to you baby. She still plays with it four months later but it isn't her favorite thing. It did keep her interest well when we first got it but at the time she wasn't really able to retrieve it if she dropped it so we might as well have purchased another cloth toy with crinkly material and a rattle.

Tin Pineapples Review

I think this is my favorite of the Haba foods than come in tins. One of the primary reasons is that at 1.9" diameter (the center hole measures about .8" in case anyone's curious), these pineapples are simply not a choking hazard, in spite of the age recommendation. They're .25" thick, and with the incredibly dense hardwoods that Haba foods are made out of, I don't think these could be broken even with intentional effort, so they're super durable. Each tin contains 7 slices of pineapple.

They're really nicely made. The little cutout areas around the age effectively simulate real pineapple, and add a level of detail that many of the other 'canned' foods don't seem to have. The outer design of the tin is pretty straightforward. It isn't the prettiest of the tins Haba makes, but we have enough pretty tins, so no great loss there.

If you're setting up a play kitchen for your kids, these are an absolutely fantastic must-have!

Pirate Squirter Review

fun and cute bath toy for my 5-month old who likes to hold & chew it. It's also unique as I've never seen a bath toy quite like it anywhere else. I love that it does a good job of squirtin'! LoL You'd be surprised how many bath squirters don't actually squirt.. I always empty it out completely at the end of each bath to keep it from getting unhygienic.

Clutching toy Dwarf Review

It's small, soft and a very sweet little face for a baby to look at. The subtle rattling sound is in the pink ball on the hat. My 6 month old could not clutch it as easily as the Haba Kringelring or other Haba wooden teethers because it is rather stout for getting little fingers around! I see it as a toy to hold for and show to my baby, rather than something to just hand to him to play with on his own. The face is printed on (the reason it does not get 5 stars) but the butterfly is embroidered.

Cookies In A Box Review

I love these little cookies. I think the embossed design on them is very pleasing and realistic, and they're versatile; they don't necessarily have to be a butter cookies (in fact they look like ginger cookies to me - they're a rich, warm medium-dark brown in color), but they could also be any variety of cracker a child could imagine. There are 10 of them in the pack; plenty to go around.

I do have two gripes with them.

The first is the packaging, which I feel could have been reinforced so as to not be a one-use-only kind of flimsy. I reinforced it myself with packing tape, and it looks fine (though it is a bit more difficult to push the cookies' tray out), but even reinforced, I don't know how much abuse this package could take.

My second issue is with the size. Sometimes I wish Haba would splurge and add that extra tenth of inch to their product in the interest of not making something a choking hazard for the younger kids. I know all of their foods say 3 and up, but it's a bit hard to tell when ordering online which foods actually *are* a choking risk. These probably are. If they were a .1 or .2 inches larger, they probably would not be.

The cookies measure 1.8" x 1.3" x .25"depth. (The entire package measures 2.65" x 2" x 1.5")

I'm not entirely disappointed, hence the four stars, but I think there could be minor improvements. I think my older daughter will enjoy these very much however.

Sea Horse Squirter Review

Tastes awful?
Why would that matter?
Hmmmmm.... because the reason i bought this whole line of bath toys is because my four month old son puts everything in his mouth, and I don't want the traditional bath toys that contain phthalates (which disrupt the endocrine system).The seahorse and the fish both taste BAD!But they squirt really well!In fact the seahorse squirts through both nostrils which is funny.
The other Haba bath toys don't taste bad, so my son plays with these and mouths the other ones (frog, mermaid, boat and pirate in the inner tube).

McFarlane Toys 6" Hanna Barbera Series 2 Assortment - Fred Flintstone with Dino Review

I sincerely hope I can get the rest of these fine McFarlane Hanna Barbera sets. I recently found most of series 2 at a discount chain store (at a quarter of the normal price), and I am so happy with them. In my effort to "mature" my collection, weeding out kids' meal toys and plushies and going for display items that reflect a more "adult" cartoon lover, I'm happy to say that as long as I have this one, I'll never need to buy another Flintstones item again (aside from DVDs, the McFarlane Drive-In scene set, and something representing the Rubbles too; And I'll always be open to Teen Pebbles collectibles, not that they've made any yet).

More of a display sculpture than a toy, this fine set features Fred on his back and bursting with laughter as Dino's ticklish tongue goes at him in a classic Flintstones image. Beautifully sculpted with energy and personality, the figures come with a base on which a roller on the back creates movement of Fred's legs, adding to the over all delight! Looking just as it does in the promo images, it's definitely a must have for the Flintstone fan and will allow you the opportunity to throw out all your cheapy Flintstones toys and proudly display this one on the bookshelf or mantle instead. I just wish this "toy" line wasn't over with, but research showed me that Series 2 came out a couple years ago (doesn't seem like it's been that long, but I'm going by McFarlane's website), leading me to think there won't be any more of these awesome Hanna Barbera sets. Too bad if that's the case. I'd love a Huckleberry Hound, Scooby-Doo, Hokey Wolf, Snagglepuss and a few others. For now though, I still have some catching up to do on these (luckily, I only liked a couple from series 1).

Who am I Mini Game-German Title Review

I bought this game as a gift for my 4 year old daughter. It is a wonderful game but better suited for a little older children. My five and seven year old love "Who am I." They have to go from very general questions to specific questions to find out what image is on their card. A little too complex for 4 year olds.

I only gave it three stars for durability because the cards are easily bendable by little hands. My kids sometimes bend a card just to mark it so they know which image it has.

Flipkin - by HABA Review

This toy is so fun! It has four distinct sides that you can keep turning to reveal. One is blue with darker blue dots, one is pink with red butterflies who have crinkle wings, one is blue with a yellow sun on it, and the last is green with an embroidered pink flower. I think this is a toy appropriate for both genders. My son loves this toy although at four months old he needs a little help turning it.

I bought this toy after purchasing several other Haba toys and being very impressed with the quality. I learned after purchasing it, however, that Haba has this toy made in China. Most of their other toys are made in Germany (maybe just the wood ones??). I have nothing against China as a country, but am a little wary of their QC after hearing reports that some products companies had made there were not made to specification and instead made of lower quality and sometimes even harmful substances.

Since there is no metal or paint on this toy, I'm not worried about the inclusion of harmful substances. I would feel a little better, however, if this toy were NOT made in the PRC.

HABA Lucky Muslin Beetle Review

I bought this item for my 5 month daughter and she LOVES it...so does everyone who sees it!!!The leaf that the beetle velcro's to is so soft I see why she likes to rub it on her face.The body of the beetle contains a bell and only one of the wings of the beetle rustles when you touch it. HABA Terra Kids Water Bottle Review

I think this is a cute addition to the other Haba Terra Kids line, but as an individual piece it's no big deal. If you are ust looking for a water bottle for kids I'd go with Camelbak or Nalgene, I went for this one because it matched all of my son's things from this line. Melamine Tableware Play Set Review
