Compass DC 03242010 Review

Compass DC 03242010Got this for a 5-year old who, though I don't know how he knew about them, asked if we could buy a compass (actually, asked for "a nort-sous sing"- cute!).This is large and chunky and has a neck cord- perfect!

I ordered one for him and one for his cousin, gave a simple lesson on the four main points and how to orient themselves by holding the compass in their hand and turning their bodies till the needle pointed to the N- now they can point their finger in the direction of south, west, and east as well, from looking on the compass dial. No need to get into the science of the earth's magnetic field at this age.

I think in the spring we will hide some 'treasure' in the yard and give them directions that use the main compass points- take 4 steps north, now take 17 steps west, etc. etc. They will love that.

Just want to point out, this is made in Germany, and the word compass is spelled KOMPASS in big letters on the box, which I assume is how it is spelled in German. Good time to point out how different countries spell things differently, and how the teacher is gonna want to see it spelled when it shows up on a spelling test some time down the road!
