Lolly (Yellow) Review

LollyThis is one of my favorite Haba play foods. At 3.25" tall (I'd estimate the disk at the top to be about 1.5" diameter) the scale is perfect for a play kitchen, and as long as it's inspected often (sure the stick *could* break, as it is quite thin) it really doesn't pose any serious choking risk, unlike most Haba foods.

Also, they're just darned cute. The yellow with the heart is probably my favorite, but they're all lovely and make a wonderful set together. Both my kids are very fond of these.

Highly recommended.

Pretzels Review

PretzelsLike all the Haba toys, the workmanship and quality are outstanding. The pretzels come in an adorable little tin, which is easy for my 19-month-old toopen. He loves the pretzels and has a great time playing with them in his new play kitchen. He is well below the suggested age for these (3 years), so we make sure he's supervised--he seems to be doing OK with them, though he probably could get the tin lid in his mouth all the way if he tried. It's hard to tell scale on this Haba stuff online, so I'll tell you that the little wooden pretzels are about the same size as the smallest type of stick pretzels you can get at the grocery store.

Bunch Of Radishes Review

Bunch Of RadishesUnlike many of the Haba play foods this bunch of radishes is absolutely in scale to what you'd expect a play-food radish to be. They were an especially exciting find for us as an addition to my daughter's Easter basket because she got to plant her own radishes in the garden this year, and they're not a common play food.

They are really well designed, smooth, and perfectly painted, but were they to separate from one another (they're held by a rubber band around the base of their felt leaves) they would, as all Haba foods are, be a serious choking hazard. I ordered them knowing this, and accepting the responsibility of supervising these things, but I can't help but feel Haba could improve this aspect of their play foods very easily.

Nonetheless, this is certainly one of the best by Haba that we own, and my daughter enjoys all these radishes immensely.

Bunch Of Carrots Review

Bunch Of CarrotsI have two gripes with the design of Haba foods.

The first is that they are choking hazards in the extreme. They are all small, very smooth, often rounded, and their width is almost always the perfect measurement for getting lodged in a child's throat. Sure, they're marketed to the 3+ (and sometimes 4+) age group, but these items should probably be well-supervised even in children this age. In my hometown, a 4-year old girl recently died from choking on a screw she'd found in her room, so it's not inconceivable that a child this age might just want to see what one of these items feels like in their mouth, and it's only a short step from there to irreparable disaster.

The second is that the scale of Haba foods are all over the map. The Lolly (Red) are sized just slightly smaller than a regular lollipop. The Bunch Of Radishes are a bit smaller than a real radish, and are the size you might expect a play food radish to be. Haba's Peas and Carrots in a Tin are the size of grapes or small gumballs, but the carrots that come in the tin with the 'peas' are the same size as the carrots in this bunch, which is about 1.5" long. The only difference being the generous length of cotton rope to symbolize the carrot leaves, and giving the 2.9" listed measurement for these carrots, which is a bit deceiving. They're minuscule, and might adequately replicate a play-food variation of baby carrots.

The saving grace of these carrots is the length of cotton rope that allows the carrots to be rubber-banded into a bunch, a detail that my daughter hasn't noticed. We left them assembled that way because it just seems safer.

They are cute, they are are smooth and well-painted, but I would go for something like Plan Toy Assorted Fruits and Vegetables instead, which is ultimately what we ended up doing. These carrots are put away for only occasional play because of the safety issues, and so while my daughter enjoys them I think she'll enjoy much more being able to have her food out all the time, rather than having to stash it on a high shelf.

Plan Toys, despite being made in Thailand is just as safe in terms of materials, and in fact got better marks in safety when tested by HealthyToys & GoodGuide than Haba overall. Oh, and the Plan Toys set is really just as good looking and so much less of a choking hazard.

Tin Stew Review

Tin StewI personally feel that this is a beautiful product crafted out of wood.Yes it is small but considering the size of play pots and pats, these little pieces are the perfect size for a beef stew.It is so beautiful. It is a small can... the pieces are NOT the size of beads.I wouldn't recommend it for small children because is the possibility of a choking on the pieces. For older children that know... this is a winner.Take a chance... all of their products are so different and beautiful!

This green lollipop makes a great addition to any play food collection! A bright, green disc sits on top of a sturdy stick. Much healthier than its real counterpart. Made of solid wood with a non-toxic finish. Crafted to withstand years of childhood adoration and play. Also comes in red, yellow and blue. Collect all four! Did you know...The word "Lollipop" was reportedly first used by the English in 1784 to describe hard candy on a stick. According to the National Confectionary Association, was probably created by cavemen who maintained beehives and collected honey by stick. Not wanting to waste the sweet residue, the cavemen most likely licked the stick and thus the first unintentional lollipop, or, candy on a stick, was born.It has been reported and verified through archeological discoveries that ancient Arabs, Chinese and Egyptians produced fruit and nut confections, which were "candied" in honey; the honey served as a preservative. The sticks were probably inserted into these treats to make them easier to eat.

Chocolate Review

ChocolateWhat you see is pretty much what you get with this one.

That said I'm totally pleased with it. The dimensions - 2" x 3" - are correct, and the size fits nicely with other play foods. The coloration and grid-like grooves very accurately mimic a real (miniaturized) bar of baker's chocolate. One of the best features of this little chocolate bar is that it is not a choking hazard for little ones. Definitely a must have for a well-stocked play kitchen.

My only regret is that I didn't order two :)

Tin Pineapples Review

Tin PineapplesI think this is my favorite of the Haba foods than come in tins. One of the primary reasons is that at 1.9" diameter (the center hole measures about .8" in case anyone's curious), these pineapples are simply not a choking hazard, in spite of the age recommendation. They're .25" thick, and with the incredibly dense hardwoods that Haba foods are made out of, I don't think these could be broken even with intentional effort, so they're super durable. Each tin contains 7 slices of pineapple.

They're really nicely made. The little cutout areas around the age effectively simulate real pineapple, and add a level of detail that many of the other 'canned' foods don't seem to have. The outer design of the tin is pretty straightforward. It isn't the prettiest of the tins Haba makes, but we have enough pretty tins, so no great loss there.

If you're setting up a play kitchen for your kids, these are an absolutely fantastic must-have!

Cookies In A Box Review

Cookies In A BoxI love these little cookies. I think the embossed design on them is very pleasing and realistic, and they're versatile; they don't necessarily have to be a butter cookies (in fact they look like ginger cookies to me - they're a rich, warm medium-dark brown in color), but they could also be any variety of cracker a child could imagine. There are 10 of them in the pack; plenty to go around.

I do have two gripes with them.

The first is the packaging, which I feel could have been reinforced so as to not be a one-use-only kind of flimsy. I reinforced it myself with packing tape, and it looks fine (though it is a bit more difficult to push the cookies' tray out), but even reinforced, I don't know how much abuse this package could take.

My second issue is with the size. Sometimes I wish Haba would splurge and add that extra tenth of inch to their product in the interest of not making something a choking hazard for the younger kids. I know all of their foods say 3 and up, but it's a bit hard to tell when ordering online which foods actually *are* a choking risk. These probably are. If they were a .1 or .2 inches larger, they probably would not be.

The cookies measure 1.8" x 1.3" x .25"depth. (The entire package measures 2.65" x 2" x 1.5")

I'm not entirely disappointed, hence the four stars, but I think there could be minor improvements. I think my older daughter will enjoy these very much however.

Ravioli Tin Biofino Review

Ravioli Tin BiofinoOk, we're devout Haba fans in my home.I love simple, battery-free toys that encourage imagination.Haba toys do just that.

I had heard about the ravioli set, but had a bit of a rough time locating it.Apparently, it was released for a short time and then re-released, which is when I caught it on Amazon.com - YAY!

Knowing that Haba food are teeny tiny little wooden pieces, (teeny tiny ADORABLE little wooden pieces),I was surprised by the relatively large size of the ravioli can and of the ravioli itself.I also liked that it is made of felt, as is the "sauce". And, for felt food, it is extremely well made, and has a lot of aesthetic appeal.Maybe even too much, as playing with this set often leaves my girls begging for pasta for dinner.

If you are familiar with Haba food in tins, this one is approximately twice the size of other sets (such as the chips, pretzels, peas & carrots, stew, etc...). I am quite pleased with this, as up until now my 2 1/2 year old was only able to play with the pineapple slices from Haba when playing kitchen with her sister.I let her use the ravioli, and she couldn't be happier!!

If you are like me, and prefer wooden and felt play foods, (and also prefer more upscale brands!), then you will be very pleased with the purchase of the Haba Biofino Ravioli set.It is adorable. It is fun. It is MACHINE WASHABLE!! (I have already washed the ravioli in a sock bag and it cleaned beautifully!)

Tin Peas And Carrots Review

Tin Peas And CarrotsWe own a lot of Haba play food, and expected small when ordering this set. The 8 carrots are indeed the size of the small Haba carrots set, which we also own, but the peas are way off. In Haba play food land, they'd be at least the size of grapes, though they look more like gumballs. Furthermore, the size and shape combined make my throat close off just looking at them. They really just scream choking hazard. I think the danger they pose would warrant extra caution even with a child older than the recommended age.

We put them away for for awhile. Even though my 3-year old's play food is only allowed out when her younger sister isn't around, I can only imagine the catastrophe if just 1 of the 11 peas escaped scrutiny during clean up.

I'm sure my 3 year old will enjoy them in a few years when we do decide to add them to her set of play food. Chances are she won't put much stock in the scale being off, or she'll just decide they're grapes or something.

The tin does have a lovely print, and like all Haba play food, the peas and carrots are pleasantly smooth to the touch and vibrantly colored.

UPDATE:

After deciding that these items would pose a choking risk to any age child who would appreciate them as a plaything, thus making them ungiftable to my children in their current form, I decided to be proactive and fix the darn things so they'd be safe. I drilled holes in each with a 1/8th in. bit. The pieces held up surprisingly well to this; none of them broke and there was only minimal splintering at the exit hole of a few pieces that needed a little sanding(these were a bit more difficult to put holes in than the Haba stew mix because all the pieces are rounded) The wood is so dense that I had a drill bit break during the process. Definitely high-quality wood.

I strung them on heavy duty nylon cord, knotting between each piece, and closing them in a bracelet-like loop. I used a 2mm diameter string made by Pepperell Braiding in the USA called "Amy" which comes in a variety of colors, and can be found at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I made two of these for this tin, leaving out 2 of the peas so that they would fit back in the tin afterward with the extra bulk of the nylon cord. The peas & carrots bracelets look really cool, better than I'd imagined. No worries about the inevitable losing of pieces, easier clean up, and the 2 'servings' are perfect for small bowls , and will fit in their cooking pans simultaneously. Best of all, with a cord that has high tensile strength (I can't break these things and I'm using just about all my strength), you really don't have to worry about the choking issue, even for a child under the recommended age.

So, if you've already bought these and are freaking about the choking issue, don't toss them out or put them away until your kids are in high school, just pull out the drill and in an hour you'll have a very cool, safe toy!
