Large Rainbow Stacking Tower Review

Large Rainbow Stacking TowerThis product offers a better variety of sizes for the little one to put into order than the little plastic one for smaller children. It also covers all of the colors in the color spectrum with a few more greens and blues for light and dark comparison.
The only drawback is that my little one likes to try to put them on her fingers for rings and sometimes they get stuck.
Over all I am pleased with this product.

GeomixMy 3 year old loves this set of blocks and creating new patterns. She especially likes to have an adult work one half of the puzzle and then she problem solves and works the other half.My 5 year old also enjoys working with the patterns but not as much and she is more independent when working with it.Overall it is well worth the money.I was surprised with how well my kids like to play with it.

A World Of Adventures Review

A World Of AdventuresWhere were toys like this when I was a kid? HABA's games are created by people who really understand the way children think and allow imaginations to soar. They're creative, original, and non-toxic. I would have gone crazy for this game and I have to say, even as an adult I am enchanted by it.I admit I am a bit of a Europhile, and I've yet to see anything from Haba that I don't like, so I'm biased. If you have a desire to get away from corporatey feeling toys and make sure your kid is playing with safe materials, their stuff fits the bill big time.

HABA's A World of Adventures is actually comprised of four games which can be played individually or together as "The Great Adventure." Two of the games are more difficult and each take between five and ten minutes to play. All of the components are absolutely beautiful to look at.

The first game, Journey Through the Jungle, takes you through the jungles of South America where you'll encounter ancient Inca temples using color recognition. Game two, Expedition to Antarctic, utilizes memory skills to travel across a treacherous ice desert as the adventurers try to make it to the igloo. The third game, High Above the Ravine, a dice game where the goal is to get across the dangerous bridge and make it to camp. The last game, Across the Volcanoes, where players hurl wooden raindrops at the volcano while getting across the terrain as quickly as possible.

The peices are wooden figures that your child might want to play with outside of this game, they are extremely well made and attractive. The boards are like works of art. This is one of the most visually appealing board game I've ever seen.

I highly recommend A World of Adventures. If you get one new game this year, consider this one. This game is educational, embraces different cultures, geographic themes, and the spirit of adventure and travel as well as utilizing cognitive skills. I can't say enough good things about it. Way exceeded expectations!

Pretzels Review

PretzelsLike all the Haba toys, the workmanship and quality are outstanding. The pretzels come in an adorable little tin, which is easy for my 19-month-old toopen. He loves the pretzels and has a great time playing with them in his new play kitchen. He is well below the suggested age for these (3 years), so we make sure he's supervised--he seems to be doing OK with them, though he probably could get the tin lid in his mouth all the way if he tried. It's hard to tell scale on this Haba stuff online, so I'll tell you that the little wooden pretzels are about the same size as the smallest type of stick pretzels you can get at the grocery store.

Tin Stew Review

Tin StewI personally feel that this is a beautiful product crafted out of wood.Yes it is small but considering the size of play pots and pats, these little pieces are the perfect size for a beef stew.It is so beautiful. It is a small can... the pieces are NOT the size of beads.I wouldn't recommend it for small children because is the possibility of a choking on the pieces. For older children that know... this is a winner.Take a chance... all of their products are so different and beautiful!

Ball Track Construction Kit Review

Ball Track Construction KitThe quality of this ball track is exceptional. The blocks are very heavy and beautiful. It requires a smooth, level surface (carpet, even very low pile, doesn't really work). You can construct it any way you wish, although I have had a little difficulty with making turns. This little glitch doesn't bother my kids [ages 6 (girl) and 3 (boy)] - they just blow the marble through when it gets stuck in the corner piece. You have to adjust it pretty frequently, as when the blocks get out of alignment it doesn't work (sometimes the marble gets stuck, other times it flies off the track). This is a minor issue for us, but may bother some. We just adjust it and carry on. Honestly, given that it is a wooden block building set, we expected this to be part of the process (ever try to keep an intricate wooden block tower perfectly square?). Even though the pieces are heavy, as the marbles travel the blocks will slide a bit over each other. We also purchased the Extra Blocks for Marble Run set (highly recommended, especially if you do not have any other unit blocks) and the Games for Ball Track (especially highly recommended - my kids LOVE this - it adds a whole new dimension of fun to the ball track). We look forward to adding more pieces to this, which is part of the fun of it (I would especially like to add the Haba extra-large starter building block set - once you see the brochure that comes with the marble run, you will understand...).My kids have played with it a bit on their own as well - they create block towers or simple ball tracks (sometimes using nothing but 2 of the ramps) to race the marbles down or for playing the ball track games. My 6-year old said it was "the funnest marble run ever". FYI: we received another ball track (plastic) as a gift. It is still fun, but very limited compared to the Haba track, and still requires parent help in setting it up. The plus side of the plastic one is that once it is set up, it tends to stay together and need very little adjusting. I expect the Haba ball track to remain in use for several years, while the plastic one will likely be broken and/or forgotten within a year.

My Very First Games - Shapes & Colors Review

My Very First Games - Shapes & ColorsMy daughter got this for Christmas when she was not quite two and a half. It's very cute.

There are three game boards (each board has a side with flowers [color game] and a side with shapes [butterfly game]) and two dice to roll, one with colors and the other with shapes.

I wish we had gotten this game earlier; she was a bit old for it at almost two and a half.Obviously, it would need to be put up when adult supervision is not available, because it does have small parts (the dice are maybe 3 times the size of regular dice).Anyway, I think as far as learning colors and shapes my daughter pretty much already knew these by that age.(There are only three shapes--circle triangle and square--and three colors--red, blue and yellow.)

I thought the game was clever and adorable and for the first few times my daughter thought so, too.I think maybe she was just too old for this game.(This will vary a lot on a kid-by-kid basis.)

The only real negative is that I thought the boards could have been a little thicker. They are definitely pretty sturdy, but if stepped on, could get a bit bent up.

This game is GREAT if you are trying to avoid Chinese toys (like we are); this one was made in Germany, I believe.

Rainbow Timber - DISCONTINUED - a great game for the whole famliy Review

Rainbow Timber - DISCONTINUED - a great game for the whole famliyIf you are familiar with the game Jenga, then you will understand why I call Rainbow Timber "Jenga with Attitude."Like Jenga, the object of the game is to remove pieces from the tower without causing it to topple over. However, by adding the colored die, the game is taken to another level - one requiring a higher level of reasoning skill and greater dexterity.

Further, Rainbow Timber adds an element of chance that is not present in Jenga. In my opinion, that aspect of the game also makes it more suitable as a game to play with younger players.Because each player must remove a piece matching the color showing when the die is rolled, younger players may feel they are on a more level playing field.Yes, the thought process and reasoning to determine which piece will be the most appropriate to remove still exists. And yes, adults may have an advantage based on those skills. But by adding the element of chance, younger players may feel they have a better opportunity to compete and win.

This game is rated for age 6 and above. However, I believe that younger children, perhaps as young as 3, could enjoy this game if an adult was playing it with them.As with other toys, one would have to gauge the maturity level and the attention span of the child to determine whether it is suitable.

Play Scale Review

Play ScaleI am a preschool teacher and I bought this to use in my classroom.I loved the idea of it being wood - not plastic.I am glad I only bought one - rather than the 4 I contmeplated.I was surprised by how small the bowls were and that they were just attached by a thin string.Somehow, the children kept getting the strings all twisted around the main "post".I did like that the bowls were fairly high so it was clear which side was higher and which was lower - with some plastic balances I have used, there is so little room for the bowl to move, it is difficult to tell which one is heavier. My students did enjoy playing with it, I am just not sure it is worth the realitively high price.

The smART Bag - DISCONTINUED - empty Review

The smART Bag - DISCONTINUED - emptyMy daughter loves this and ahs taken it on the plane, in the car, to Grandma's and the hotel. We put pictures in the little frames on the front of her Grandparents. We've had playdoh, play dots, markers, crayons, mini tape, stickers, construction paper, paints, memory game, tiny airplane toy, tiny puzzles, clay, pencils, coloring books and so much more in the bag.Although she's only two and the bag says for an older age she takes very good care of it and it isn't too big for her to manage.I only gave it 4 stars for durability b/c we put too much in the front zipper and it started to come unsewn. There is a wonderful clipboard inside and slots for paper. The dollar aisle at Target can fill this bag and learning stores have tiny travel art supplies. We love this bag so much we've bought several as gifts.GREAT GIFT for a boy or a girl.

Baby Review

BabyThese were my daughter's first blocks at 12 months, and it's been a pleasure to see her go from practicing gripping and picking up one block, passing it from one hand to the other, banging the blocks together (makes a great sound! enjoyable for her and muted enough for my ears) to now stacking them as many as 5 or 6 high at 17 months. Also, as far as size, I have never been concerned that my daughter would choke on these. The color stains are a nice mix. I like that they are not all primary colors, and my child is drawn to all of them. My only minor complaint is that the shiny, smooth varnish makes the blocks slide against against each other making it more challenging to stack them. In short, there's not much grip. It's not a serious flaw, and has not prevented my child from getting a lot out of playing with these blocks.

Cuboro Standard Review

Cuboro StandardThis is the most innovative, well designed, environmentally/durable made building toy I have seen with an exception to Kapla. The swiss makers have put a lot of thought and energy into this and it shows. I got it for my 4 year old (still a little young for it) for xmas, and I was totally pleased. Unlike other marble runs, which are much less expensive, this one challenges the child with the most possibilities both in the interchangeable nature of the uniform block pieces, but also in that large portions of a run can be in the form of tunnels which are out of sight of the child. All other marble runs have the marble in plain view, which works more like a race track than a puzzle or system which Cuboro excels at. That said, if you are a parent trying to offer marble runs as an alternative to playing with matchbox car tracks--cuboro might disappoint.

This game made me think about the needed changes in schooling put forth by an an expert on learning. Cuboro is all about tinkering:

All the pseudo-educational talk aside, Cuboro is a lot of FUN!
