My Very First Games - Shapes & Colors Review

My Very First Games - Shapes & ColorsMy daughter got this for Christmas when she was not quite two and a half. It's very cute.

There are three game boards (each board has a side with flowers [color game] and a side with shapes [butterfly game]) and two dice to roll, one with colors and the other with shapes.

I wish we had gotten this game earlier; she was a bit old for it at almost two and a half.Obviously, it would need to be put up when adult supervision is not available, because it does have small parts (the dice are maybe 3 times the size of regular dice).Anyway, I think as far as learning colors and shapes my daughter pretty much already knew these by that age.(There are only three shapes--circle triangle and square--and three colors--red, blue and yellow.)

I thought the game was clever and adorable and for the first few times my daughter thought so, too.I think maybe she was just too old for this game.(This will vary a lot on a kid-by-kid basis.)

The only real negative is that I thought the boards could have been a little thicker. They are definitely pretty sturdy, but if stepped on, could get a bit bent up.

This game is GREAT if you are trying to avoid Chinese toys (like we are); this one was made in Germany, I believe.

Magnetic Stairs Review

Magnetic StairsI purchased a lot of Haba toys, even more of the marble run toys.
All their products are super high quality, and super fun for my
2 and a half year old son. I purchased this one a few months ago
and my son absolutely loves it, and plays with it all the time, all
his friends, and mommies of his friends love it too. Everyone wants to
get one after they see their kids wrapped up with it for long periods of
time. I love toys that are fun and make kids smart, and that's what this
toy is and does. Kids have to use strategy to figure out where to put the
red and blue pieces to make the marbles go where they want them to,
not to mention my son uses his little cars on it as well. It's a really good
sized toy, I like toys that are bigger and hardy. I'm also happy that it's made
in Europe and I don't have to worry about possible lead.

Haba Dragonstone Castle Review

Haba Dragonstone CastleMy son loves this little castle. Contrary to what you would think reading a previous review this castle doesn't come with inhabitants. There's a more expensive version that does though. My son loves it just the same. Fantasia Review

FantasiaThis would be really great except the magnets don't stick to the wood pieces. We also have the Haba Indian Summer and those magnets stick really well. These slide right off so you end up with a pile of wood shapes that don't stick to the magnet board. Also, while the other Haba magnetic arranging games have a thin wood magnetic board, this one is just a piece of cardboard.
UPDATE:I contacted HABA by email and they immediately replied saying they would take care of the problem. They sent me a new set of magnets (which have the 3M logo on the back) and so far they are sticking really well.I am very impressed with their customer service.

Haba Wooden Clip Tra-la-la Review

Haba Wooden Clip Tra-la-laI bought two of these clips to clip Max and the Caterpillar on to my son's car seat. All it took was a little tug and they would pop right off. Then the metal was bent so much that they wouldn't clip to anything else after. So they kind of sat around until my friend brought her two year old over and he chewed on them until the metal piece came off of the wooden piece and he nearly choked on it! We ended up throwing them both away. We added Dragolino and my son loves all 3 of his springy pull-type toys but I don't recommend these.

Monza - by HABA Review

Monza - by HABAI bought this game for my 4 1/2 year old son because he loves anything that has to do with cars.It turns out my husband and I both love playing it with him because it is a little bit more challenging than other board games of this type, like Candy Land.In this game, you have a race track with 3 lanes and each lane has colored squares in it that are staggered with the squares in the lane next to it.Each player rolls 6 colored dice. You advance your car by matching the colored dice with the same colored squares that are adjoined to the square your car is on.Sometimes your roll can give you different routes to take on the track and you have to figure out which sequence of dice will get your car the furthest around the track. After reading the directions, I thought it might be too advanced for my son, but he picked it up pretty quickly and likes playing it and the game is interesting enough for adults too.

Walker Wagon Review

Walker WagonThis is a wonderful walker for very young children as it is heavy enough so the child won't fall down. On the other hand it is difficult to tun, but my daughter doesn't seem to care (almost 11 MO old). She stops and turn it while seating. She loves to bang it on the door (very noisy). The wheels are very silent on the floor. She likes when a cat (or a friend or a stuff animal) seats on it. She puts many things in it (blocks, duplo, ... and goes around). The great thing that I have noticed is that with this walker (contrarily to the plastics one of the playgroups) she stands up straight when she walks. I think she feels secure and she knows that it won't flip over.

Educo My Creative Cookery Club Review

Educo My Creative Cookery ClubOkay, so let me just say that I shopped around, to say the least, before deciding on this kitchen for my daughter's 2nd birthday. I actually bid on and paid for the KidKraft Large Kitchen, but for the first time in my ebay history, the seller dissappeared. No money, no kitchen. Anyways, so maybe having set my heart on the hefty Kidkraft kitchen had me a bit set up when I received this one.

Don't get me wrong, it is adorable! And I absolutely love all of the accessories that come with it - fantastic! We supplemented the wooden food supply and bought a set of silverware (all from Target) and it is the pieces that came with this kitchen that I consistently find my daughter playing with. She especially loves the salt and pepper shakers and the pegs for hanging some of the items on. She is always bringing me something to eat on the plates, as well. I think she agrees with me, the wood of this kitchen and its pieces just feels really good to the hand - it has a satiny clean feel to it.

My parents had recommended laquering it to protect it against water stains. Heck no! I had been completely committed to not getting a huge plastic monstrosity, no matter how many bells and whistles it had. Actually I think the bells and whistles do children a disservice by encouraging creative laziness. So, the fact that this kitchen is all wood, clean, nontoxic, I really love that!

Its also important to mention that assembly was easy and impressive. The entire deal goes together with less than a dozen screws. Its almost like a puzzle and I appreciated the ingenuity of its construction.

So what don't I like?It is a lot smaller than I envisioned. My daughter isn't that tall, but she is almost too tall to comfortably access the oven and other door. They just sort of disappear. Also, for the price, it does seem to be a bit flimsy - only time will tell whether that is the case or just a perception. I've also been dissappointed that the sink didn't come with a removable bowl like so many other kitchens. It doesn't seem to bother my daughter who is forever washing her hands there, but I wonder how long that will last.

Basically, I think it is a wonderful kitchen for the young toddler years. Everything is soft and curved and light. Everything fits in little hands and feels good, too. It is wonderful to have all of the coordinating pieces and it really is just the cutest thing you've ever seen!

However, I wouldn't recommend it for older or multiple children. I expect to upgrade to a bigger, heavier-duty kitchen sometime in the future.

Little Garden Pegging Game Review

Little Garden Pegging GameI purchased the Haba Junior Peg Board at the same time for [...]. I was surprised when they both arrived and were pretty much the same size. The Junior Peg Board was listed for ages 1 1/2 at the time I purchased it, but I still don't let my just turned two year old child play with it unsupervised. It has since been changed to 2 1/2.

As far as the little flower garden, here's my opinion:

Pros:Cute

Cons: Way too expensive for what you get. They should have made it a bit larger. Half the pieces to this toy are choking hazards. I bagged that half up and figure my child can use them when three or older. The holes are small enough on the pieces that they can get stuck easily on little fingers. I keep this toy out of reach and only bring it down for supervised play.

Basically, if your two year old explores by putting things in their mouth occasionally or puts their fingers in holes, this is not the toy for you. It's a toy that I look at and want to kick myself for spending the money on.

ConvoiThe price is high but it's clear that you have to pay more for better quality. This is a top-knotch, quality toy.
