A World Of Adventures Review

A World Of AdventuresWhere were toys like this when I was a kid? HABA's games are created by people who really understand the way children think and allow imaginations to soar. They're creative, original, and non-toxic. I would have gone crazy for this game and I have to say, even as an adult I am enchanted by it.I admit I am a bit of a Europhile, and I've yet to see anything from Haba that I don't like, so I'm biased.If you have a desire to get away from corporatey feeling toys and make sure your kid is playing with safe materials, their stuff fits the bill big time.

HABA's A World of Adventures is actually comprised of four games which can be played individually or together as "The Great Adventure." Two of the games are more difficult and each take between five and ten minutes to play. All of the components are absolutely beautiful to look at.

The first game, Journey Through the Jungle, takes you through the jungles of South America where you'll encounter ancient Inca temples using color recognition. Game two, Expedition to Antarctic, utilizes memory skills to travel across a treacherous ice desert as the adventurers try to make it to the igloo. The third game, High Above the Ravine, a dice game where the goal is to get across the dangerous bridge and make it to camp. The last game, Across the Volcanoes, where players hurl wooden raindrops at the volcano while getting across the terrain as quickly as possible.

The peices are wooden figures that your child might want to play with outside of this game, they are extremely well made and attractive. The boards are like works of art. This is one of the most visually appealing board game I've ever seen.

I highly recommend A World of Adventures. If you get one new game this year, consider this one. This game is educational, embraces different cultures, geographic themes, and the spirit of adventure and travel as well as utilizing cognitive skills. I can't say enough good things about it. Way exceeded expectations!

My Very First Games - Shapes & Colors Review

My Very First Games - Shapes & ColorsMy daughter got this for Christmas when she was not quite two and a half.It's very cute.

There are three game boards (each board has a side with flowers [color game] and a side with shapes [butterfly game]) and two dice to roll, one with colors and the other with shapes.

I wish we had gotten this game earlier; she was a bit old for it at almost two and a half.Obviously, it would need to be put up when adult supervision is not available, because it does have small parts (the dice are maybe 3 times the size of regular dice).Anyway, I think as far as learning colors and shapes my daughter pretty much already knew these by that age.(There are only three shapes--circle triangle and square--and three colors--red, blue and yellow.)

I thought the game was clever and adorable and for the first few times my daughter thought so, too.I think maybe she was just too old for this game.(This will vary a lot on a kid-by-kid basis.)

The only real negative is that I thought the boards could have been a little thicker.They are definitely pretty sturdy, but if stepped on, could get a bit bent up.

This game is GREAT if you are trying to avoid Chinese toys (like we are); this one was made in Germany, I believe.

Ear Tug Review

Ear TugAnother fabulous game from Haba! It is a take on any other bingo style game, with a few twists.

Ear Tug consists of 9 heavy cardboard squares, each decorated with an animal with cut outs where the ears should be. There is a blue fabric bag that contains 21 wooden and colored shapes, that represent the ears.

The object is to pick a card (or 2 or 3 or 4 depending on the number of players). Each player puts their hand into the bag, which you cannot see through. You must pick out a shape and if it matches one of your cards, you place it on that card and play on. There are 3 blue pieces that cannot be used, just to keep things interesting. The person who wins is the one that fills their cards first.

We bought this 3 years ago for my now 6 year old. She and her brother, age 3, love to play this game together. There is no need for parental help, reading or counting. It is simply a your turn/ my turn type game.

It has held up and is quite durable. I recommend this!

Play Scale Review

Play ScaleI am a preschool teacher and I bought this to use in my classroom.I loved the idea of it being wood - not plastic.I am glad I only bought one - rather than the 4 I contmeplated.I was surprised by how small the bowls were and that they were just attached by a thin string.Somehow, the children kept getting the strings all twisted around the main "post".I did like that the bowls were fairly high so it was clear which side was higher and which was lower - with some plastic balances I have used, there is so little room for the bowl to move, it is difficult to tell which one is heavier.My students did enjoy playing with it, I am just not sure it is worth the realitively high price.

The smART Bag - DISCONTINUED - emptyMy daughter loves this and ahs taken it on the plane, in the car, to Grandma's and the hotel.We put pictures in the little frames on the front of her Grandparents.We've had playdoh, play dots, markers, crayons, mini tape, stickers, construction paper, paints, memory game, tiny airplane toy, tiny puzzles, clay, pencils, coloring books and so much more in the bag.Although she's only two and the bag says for an older age she takes very good care of it and it isn't too big for her to manage.I only gave it 4 stars for durability b/c we put too much in the front zipper and it started to come unsewn.There is a wonderful clipboard inside and slots for paper.The dollar aisle at Target can fill this bag and learning stores have tiny travel art supplies.We love this bag so much we've bought several as gifts.GREAT GIFT for a boy or a girl.

Orchard - Fooor Game Review

Orchard - Fooor GameI just bought this game for my daughters 5th birthday. I have 3 daughters, twins that are 7 and my 5 year old.I was looking for a unique game that can't be bought at wal-mart.Something new and different. This is it!! We had a great time playing this game.The girls wanted to play and play.Fun for parents too because it is a pretty quick game.Also the fruit is wooden, durable and so cute.Only complain is the baskets, they are very cheap and are already breaking, but I don't think this is a big deal because I am sure I can find some different small baskets to use.It is a little pricey but I think it will last a very long time, it is very well made besides the baskets.It has 10 pears, 10 apples, 10 cherrys and 10 plums. These each run about $2.50 each so it's really not that highly priced. Also it's not made in china where something is recalled everyday, you can trust Haba toys!

Monza - by HABA Review

Monza - by HABAI bought this game for my 4 1/2 year old son because he loves anything that has to do with cars.It turns out my husband and I both love playing it with him because it is a little bit more challenging than other board games of this type, like Candy Land.In this game, you have a race track with 3 lanes and each lane has colored squares in it that are staggered with the squares in the lane next to it.Each player rolls 6 colored dice.You advance your car by matching the colored dice with the same colored squares that are adjoined to the square your car is on.Sometimes your roll can give you different routes to take on the track and you have to figure out which sequence of dice will get your car the furthest around the track.After reading the directions, I thought it might be too advanced for my son, but he picked it up pretty quickly and likes playing it and the game is interesting enough for adults too.

Haba Lucky Sock Dip Card Game Review

Haba Lucky Sock Dip Card GameThis is one of those games made for kids to play with each other and not against a parent. It is mostly a matching game, with an added element of time and counting.

Each person has to find 5 matches and then grab the 'sock monster'. We have the "Socken Zocken" version, so you are also supposed to yell "SOCKEN ZOCKEN"! The person to win 3 games total is the overall winner.

This game is great for kids to play with each other. But to add an adult in, there is a need for the adult to hold back quite a bit. (Not that there is anything wrong with this, it just doesn't make it very enjoyable to play as a family.)

It is good for learning matching skills, colors and beginner counting. My 6 year old got bored of the game before she became good at it. So while we played it for a good year, now it sits in the closet until her 3 year old brother can grasp the concept. Perhaps then she will want to play again, too?

It is colorful and more interesting than many of the other matching type games we have tried. Haba is always impressive with their quality and design.

Dancing Eggs (4448) - by HABA Review

Dancing Eggs - by HABADancing Eggs is yet another clever, high-quality toy/game from the German company Haba. Simple to play, it's a scream for kids and adults.

COMPONENTS:

The game comes in a recycled paper egg crate housing nine full-sized rubber eggs, one full-sized wooden egg, an action die, and an egg placement die.

GAME PLAY:

Players in turn roll the action die. The action die features pictographs of six actions:
* "Cluck, cluck, cluck"--the player who rolled can take an egg from the box after saying the key phrase.
* Egg Drop--a rubber egg is dropped and the person who snatches it after it bounces off the table gets to keep it.
* Run Around the Table--all the players run around the game table, the first one back to his/her spot takes an egg from the box.
* Die Grab--first player to grab the die after this action comes up gets to take an egg from the box.
* "Cock-a-Doodle-Doo"--the first player to fully crow out the key phrase gets to take an egg from the box.
* Mute--if this action comes up and a player mistakes its similar graphic for "Cock-a-Doodle-Doo" and says the key phrase, the player surrenders an egg or loses a turn.

After taking an egg, the player receiving it must roll the placement die to determine where that egg will be placed on the players body:
* Under the chin
* Side of the neck
* Under the arm
* In the crook of the arm
* Between the knees
* Anywhere the player chooses

Each rubber egg counts for a point, with the wooden egg (much harder to hold in place) counting for two. In the course of play, if a player drops a held egg, the round is over, the player who lost the egg is out, and the points are tallied. The player with the most points wins the round.

PROS:

* The game components are exceptionally well made.

* The game play is enormous fun.

* Everyone who plays this game enjoys it.

* Because it's not one of the common games out there, people are intrigued by its unfamiliarity.

* All types of people enjoy the game. Though aimed at kids, adults may enjoy it even more.

* It requires good coordination and helps kids master it.

* The game play gets people up and moving.

* It's very simple to learn.

* The game makes for embarrassing moments and plenty of hysterical visual imagery, especially as people attempt some of the actions while loaded with eggs. (Try running around a table with an egg between your knees, for instance.)CONS:

* The game requires enough room for people to run around the table.

* Disaster may strike in the form of injuries or household damage during that same run-around-the-table portion of the game.

* Uncoordinated or very young children may struggle to hold even one egg. (The game is recommend for kids five and up. That's an accurate assessment of the skill level and may even be a bit generous to the youngsters.)

* Though it includes nine eggs, in the four player game there may not be enough eggs to go around. (The instructions compensate for this by allowing players to take eggs from other players. Some folks recommend actually buying two sets of this game to double the number of eggs. When playing with adults, that's a wise idea.)

* The instructions are vague as to how to address some situations that might arise while playing the game.

CONCLUSION:

A definite winner. Though it's not a cheap game, in its favor it's not a cheap game; the components are well crafted, especially the rubber eggs. Peals of laughter will tell you how much people enjoy playing Dancing Eggs. Great for parties, great for kids, great for mixed groups--it's simply a great game. With the caveat being the need for space and for a box of Band-Aids for those overly ambitious battles between players who treat racing around the table like Death Race 2000, it's hard to go wrong with this fine game from Haba.

Lets Go Shopping - by HABAIf you have a child that is not into sharing this game is GREAT.In a fun and enjoyable environment it teaches that it's not only good to share but fun too.You pick a card and from the pile of food items they have to recognize and obtain the item on the card.Now, here is the sharing part, if someone already has the item they have to give it up.Items usually change hands several times.We had cousins that we really had problems with when it came to sharing toys.So, we took this game one step further and timed the games to see how fast we could go through the cards.It left little time to think about what had to be given up and always seemed to end in laughing and more sharing than the game called for.I love the real solid wood pieces. I will keep this game forever. Will be a great game for grandchildren....

Haba Ring A Thing Pegging Game Review

Haba Ring A Thing Pegging GameMy two year old daughter is in love with the many games my four year old has and plays with. Problem is, many of them have small pieces, and my two year old isn't past the mouthing stage, so we either have to really carefully supervise, or put them away. The latter greatly offends her sensibilities.

I was hesitant to purchase this game because it looked... well boring. But I found it intriguing all the same- the idea of a game that is made for toddlers. Specifically, a game that is simple in its rules, and has large enough pieces to not pose a risk. I took a chance, having read so many glowing reviews. In hindsight, I might have just stuck with my intuition.

The pieces to this game are quite nice. They all have that fantastic silky-smooth Haba finish, are brightly-colored, and they're much larger than most of the teeny tiny wooden Haba toys we own. The rings measure, from smallest to largest: 1.8", 2.25", 2.5" diameter. The people are 2.7" tall and .8" diameter, and the dice is a 1.25" cube - much larger than a standard die.

The downside is that the gameplay options (there are 3) included in the instructions are boring, boring, boring. Not for me, mind you; I might well have expected that, but for my two-year old. We've tried all three at various times and only end up with her walking away, baffled at how so much die-rolling can result in so little action.

Allow me to pare them down to their essentials for the purposes of demonstration.

Game 1: Place all people and rings in the center of the table. Each player rolls the die and places a corresponding ring on the people. If all rings of that color are used up, roll again. Game is over when all the rings have been distributed. The game suggests you can then offer a reward of dancing in a circle, but my toddler recommends, instead, running away and refusing to have any more of this nonsense.

Game 2: Select a person. Roll the die to try to get the same color as the person you have chosen. Didn't get the right color? Pity! You cannot take a ring! (Yes, I'm quoting there). Pity, indeed says my toddler. After 5 rounds where neither of us rolled our correct color, she said, "Pity! This game is over, mom!" (I'm paraphrasing there.)

Game 3: Choose a person, stack five rings of various colors on the person. Each player rolls the dice until the color on the die matches the top ring, remove the ring, and so on. Of course, we didn't even get to die-rolling on this one, because the idea of rings of various colors stacked on a person with a different color hat was (hello!) one of those things that offends a rigid, rule-driven, tantrum-prone toddler's sensibilities. "No! No! No!" she howled, and quickly removed and reassembled the rings in their correct size and color order with the correct people.

Now, I'm not necessarily precluding the idea that a game could, with a little thought, be conjured, effectively using these cool game pieces in a way which might allow a faster-paced, fun game. After a failed attempt on each of the prescribed games, I began brainstorming, and have come up with a few alternative methods where participation would be virtually guaranteed on each roll of the die, foregoing the whole, "Pity! All you got to do this turn was roll the die!" structure that annoyingly pervades all playing options which came with the game.

However, I feel it's only fair to base the rating of the game on the merit of what it provides pre-improvisation, and not on its possible potential beyond what presented in the immediate sense. And so, while the individual pieces of the game have provided some mild amusement in a roleplay/imagination form, I feel the game playing end is sorely lacking, and not well thought out for the age group for which its intended. Also, it's really quite expensive and I say that having gotten it at 20% off. I understand the whole German wooden safe toy correlation, but I was hoping more for a game, and less for a few pricey, aesthetically pleasing wooden pieces.

A better game, in my opinion, is Haba's Zitternix, which my two year old is surprising capable of joining in on and enjoying, and which allows for a guaranteed corresponding action for each roll of the die, keeping things a bit more exciting. I think continual active participation in a game is key for maintaining interest at this age.

Sleepy Princess and the Pea Review

Sleepy Princess and the PeaSleepy Princess and the Pea is a beautiful game for children ages 3-12. It is made by Haba toys, a German toy manufacturer that makes games and toys using real materials like wood and fabric to produce top-quality products that will make any parent and every child happy.

Sleepy Princess is based on the classic fairy tale where a disheveled young girl shows up at a palace one rainy night and claims to be a princess. The queen tests her by putting her in a bed with dozens of mattresses, pillows and blankets beneath her and a tiny pea buried beneath them all. If she is a real princess, thinks the queen, she will be so delicate that she will feel the discomfort of the pea beneath the huge pile of bedding. Of course, the princess passes the test and is rewarded with the prince of the palace's hand in marriage.

This game is a relatively simple game, all the players have to do is stack the provided mattresses on top of the pea without allowing them to tumble. Children do not need to be able to read to play this game, but it will help them develop their fine motor skills and the cooperative version of the game does away with the winner/loser sensibility that so many American children's games have.

Children will find the charming concept and fun and colorful game pieces (including the adorable wooden princess doll) irresistable.This game is particularly enticing for children who are studying Waldorf or Montessori methods of education, where tactile learning is encouraged.

Keep it steady! - by HABA Review

Keep it steady - by HABAWe purchased 3 Haba games for our 4 year old daughter this Christmas: This one, Animal Upon Animal, and Socken Zochen.

Something that really makes this game stand apart from the others is that it leaves adults and kids on a pretty level playing field. Hands down, the best feature of this game is its accessibility to very young children, without the detriment of having to dumb down the play to allow them to win. My youngest - 23 months - can even join in on the fun. She does tend to 'lose' most times, being a bit more clumsy (sometimes intentionally) with the pieces, but since winning and losing are moot concepts at her age, she's hardly heartbroken over this matter, and often delights in seeing the pieces collapse. Other times, a game where we include her can actually go on for a good bit, depending on her mood.

The game consists of the wooden ring, 27 6" long sticks in vary widths: 9 large width blue sticks, 9 medium width red sticks, and 9 thin yellow sticks, and a die with two sides yellow, two sides blue, two sides red. The gameplay is simple. Grab all the sticks together, slide the wooden ring around the center of the bundle, give it a twist, and stand it up. This procedure is not easily manageable by a young child, and must be done by an adult. It's also worth mentioning that the game must be played on a cloth or carpeted surface as the sticks are liable to slide on a slick surface like a table with as small a movement as the roll ofthe die.

The game begins by rolling the die, pulling out the corresponding piece, and taking turns back and forth this way until the structure collapses. A caveat to this rule is if you roll a color that would surely topple the whole thing you can forfeit your turn, returning a piece of the same color and point value to the box. If all the pieces of the color you roll are already drawn, you may chose any color.

At the end of the game, assuming you make it to the end, which is the point that 3 sticks are left standing and all others have been drawn, you tally the score for each player based on the worth of the sticks. Blue are 3, red are 2, and yellow are 1.

This game reminds me of a combination of advanced pick-up sticks, and booby trap (or hens and chicks as some might know it) because of the multi-colored pieces and the corresponding difficulty in removing large pieces versus small.

It's a great concept. Easy to play, difficult to master. Because the balance of skill isn't skewed toward the adult, I don't feel I have to pace myself to give my daughter a fair chance. Because the integrity of the stack is reliant on all moves played, once it becomes unstable it's anyone's guess who will topple it. I bring the pile crashing down as often as the kids do. Which of course, makes this a great deal more fun to play than many preschool-aged games for mom and dad.

All told, I think this is a fantastic little game. And, of course, I love that is made in Germany, not China.

Keep It Steady! is a fun game for children ages 6 and up. Similar to the traditional game of "Pick Up Sticks", this German version adds an element of complexity with a wood ring.
