Escalier Couleurs Review

Escalier CouleursIt seems that finding children's gifts this year is more about safety than anything else.

Colored dowels in a block of wood. Boring? Quite the contrary. This is great for developing hand eye coordination, matching, counting...

The beauty is in the simplicity.

Haba Klettinos Soft Stacking Toy Review

Haba Klettinos Soft Stacking ToyThis is one of the best baby toys we've gotten yet!As a younger baby (7-10 months), my daughter loved to pull these apart and mouth them.Good news, they are completely safe!No plastic, washable, and no small parts. Now as she enters being a toddler, she is beginning to understand how to put the pieces together to form an "animal."I like that she is able to do it herself, and it encourages creativity. It will be a toy that grows with her for awhile.A great toy to spend your money on!

Haba Cuddling Town Toy Review

Haba Cuddling Town ToySeemingly just some soft blocks for babies to play, but there are a little surprises here and there, the half circle that squeals when you squeeze it, the green tube comes out of the center of the square block and makes even louder sound when you shake it...more opportunities for babies to discover one by one.

Haba Wonder Dice Review

Haba Wonder DiceThis is the perfect first set of blocks for a baby because they're soft so baby can't get hurt. The colors are vibrant and most of the pieces make some sort of sound, either rattling or crinkling. My 7 month old is too young to build with them herself, but she has fun knocking down my creations. This is currently my favorite toy for my baby, and I love that the blocks are washable, unlike a lot of soft toys out there that are surface wash only (which is kind of garbage in my opinion). Also unlike plastic toys, you don't need to worry about chemicals like phthalates leaching out of these blocks when your baby chews on them. Haba toys are great because they're very well designed and Europeans have more stringent requirements and do more testing for children's toys.

Haba Dream Journey Review

Haba Dream JourneyI bought this toy for my seven month old's first Christmas, and she loves it!I thought she might not enjoy it for a few months, but she already loves to play with it... she enjoys the noises that the little guys make, and likes to roll the boat back and forth.I know it's a toy that will grow with her, too... as she gets older she'll be able to drag it around as she walks, etc.As a mom, I am thrilled with the quality of this toy, and love knowing that it is safety tested and used water-based paints. Highly recommended!

Haba Animal Upon Animal Game Review

Haba Animal Upon Animal GameWe ordered Animal Upon Animal (Tier auf Tier) for our 4 year old's Christmas present. It seemed like a solid dexterity game and we wanted him to work on his hand skills.

From the moment he opened the box and picked up the chunky wooden animals he has loved this game. He pulls it out at any opportunity.

Animal Upon Animal is a simple game, and other than 2 symbols on the die (the question mark and the hand, neither of which seemed immediately obvious for us and we had to check the rule book for several plays before we learned what they meant) the rules are quickly understood by all players. Players roll the die and either balance 1 animal, 2 animals, give an animal to another player to place, allow other players to chose the animal they place, or place an animal to the front or rear of the alligator.

The pieces are chunky and well-made (although I think detailing on 2 sides instead of just 1 would be better). Children can easily handle them. They also have bumps and curves which make placement interesting for older players (matching the snake humps or the bristles of the hedgehogs, curving the beak of a toucan around the leg of another animal).

Play continues and often the pile falls. One thing I like about this game is that you only keep 2 of the fallen animals no matter how many fall. This encourages a fun game where younger players don't feel beaten down and where older ones feel free to experiment.

This can even be fun as a solo venture, seeing how many pieces you can add to the tower of animals. We also added a rule ourselves to make a more even game when adults and young children are playing. The adults simply don't allow themselves easy moves like placing an animal in front of or behind the alligator or handing off pieces for a younger player to place.

Perhaps not a game for adults or older children, but a very fun dexterity game for young children. Easy to set up on their own (unlike Break the Ice or Jenga) and encouraging fast play.
